In this video I talk about one of the essential factors allowing us to reach the destination we are pursuing or the goal we want to achieve: perseverance.
We often hear this phrase: “a journey of a thousand miles starts with a small step”. True. But useless. It is reassuring, because it is telling us that, even though the journey is long, we just need to start and we are already accomplishing a great deal of it. If you think about it, though, the “first steps” are all around us: quitting smoking – again! – starting a new diet – that fails when we see that delicious cake – going to the gym – for a month or two.
The first step is easy. In the 1000-mile-journey metaphor, the most important step we need to learn to manage is the 800th mile – when we are dead tired, and the road starts climbing.
Marathon runners know it well: most of those that participate in this run and quit, do so around the 20th mile – when they are dead tired, but there is still a long way to go.
Knowing how to manage the 20th mile makes a difference between reaching what we want and going back home.
So, what’s your 20th mile?
